Getting Rid of a Trojan

There are things that get a foothold in our lives and they are almost impossible to get rid of.  There are physical problems that we might have, such as warts.  There may also be some mental problems that we have that just seem to hang on.  Another problem that many of us seem to have from time to time is a computer virus.  While this does not appear to fall in the same class as physical or mental problems, it can be frustrating enough that it will cause both.  One of the most notorious types of computer viruses that we can get is the Trojan horse virus.  It sneaks into our computer, piggyback on a file that looks harmless enough, yet when we open it, the virus grabs hold of our computer and shakes it to the ground.  Not all Trojan horse viruses are as malicious as the worst ones, but they all have the potential to do some real damage to our personal computers.  So what are you to do if you find yourself stuck with a this kind of virus that is wreaking havoc on your computer?

Many people like to tackle problems like these themselves.  There are some people that take their computer to a professional as soon as they have a sign of a problem but many of them will at least give it a shot themselves first.  Getting rid of a Trojan  is not a very easy thing to do.  Sure, there are some viruses that have removal programs written for them, but for the most part you will have to manually go in and remove the virus. You will also need to remove any residual traces of it from your system.  This can seem like an overwhelming task but there are some ways to make it easier for you.

There is a software program that is known as “Hijack This.”  It is a freely available download that runs on your computer and gives you a list of all the processes that are running in the background.  Trojans tend to stay loaded in your computer's memory all of the time.  By getting a Hijack This log, you will be able to see all of the different processes that are running on your computer.  The only problem with this log file is that the results are very hard to decipher.

There are some tech forums on the Internet where you can post your log file and get some free advice.  Most of the time they will answer you rather quickly, provided you make your posting exactly as they have advised.  They then let you know what kind of problems your computer is experiencing and give you a step-by-step approach to cleaning the problem yourself.  Doing it yourself may require going in and editing the registry and some other technical things that you may not be comfortable with.  If you have a friend or relative they can help you to be able to go through the uncomfortable parts you will come out of the situation more at ease with your computer.
